January 15th Savannah High School Basketball Round-Up

Tuesday, January 15th was a big night for high school basketball across the region. In girls’ basketball, Bryan County beat Metter, the defending Region 2-2A champion, for the second time this season. Shelby Gunn was a top scorer for the Redskins, bringing 12 points to the board, and Alation Eason scored 11 points, bringing the final score to 55-36. Bryan County has one of only seven unbeaten girls’ basketball teams in the state.

 

Johnson High came out on top against Jenkins 50-25 in their city rivalry game. Jasmin Thompson and Atalazia Baker each contributed 15 points for Johnson, helping the Atom Smashers conquer the Warriors.

 

Savannah Country Day knocked off McIntosh County Academy with a 47-22 win. Amelia Wylly led the Hornets with 10 points, helping bring SCD back to 0.500 on the season.

 

Richmond Hill defeated Hilton head 46-21. Jaxson Douglas led with 10 points, and Kirra Perry was not far behind, offering the Wildcats 8 points in the game.

 

Calvary Day beat Claxton 55-37 in a region victory. Mahkayla Premo scored 17 points and Zhani Thompson and Jasmin Akins scored 15 and 14 points respectively.

 

Groves fell to Savannah High 50-38. The Region 3-3A loss was the result of leading Blue Jacket scorers KèTara Trappio and Martina Stokes.

 

Portal lost to Savannah Christian 48-18. Paige Dennis led with 19 points in three quarters. Savannah Christian moved up to become 8-2 in region play for Region 3-A.

 

In boys’ basketball, Claxton beat Clayton 50-45 in forced overtime by Devon Hagan. Norea Hunter was a leading scorer, adding 15 points to the board for the Tigers.

 

Savannah Country Day came out on top against McIntosh County Academy 66-55. Albert Grandy scored 20 points, helping SCD win their fifth straight region game.

 

Benedictine conquered Southeast Bulloch 67-55. The Cadets led the Yellow Jackets 41-18 in the first half.

 

Groves beat Savannah High in a Region 3-3A victory 61-57. Nydgell Spikes scored 20 points for Groves, but Ja’Nard McKinney scored the game high of 27 points for the Blue Jackets.

 

Beaufort lost to Bethesda 72-33. Robert Moore scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds, and Reggie Gadson contributed 12 points.

 

Ware County fell to the New Hampstead Phoenix 62-50. Tyrell Garvin’s 17 points contributed to the win. Friday, January 18th, NHHS will host Statesboro in a Region 2-5A game.

 

Woodville- Tompkins, No. 1 in the state for Class 2A, beat Swainsboro 81-47. Bernard Pelote scored 20 points, while Charleston Willingham and Preston Crisp added 14 points each to the board. Friday night, the Wolverines, with their 20-0 record, host No. 6 in the state Vidalia, who are 18-2 this season.
