Game preview: Marist at Benedictine
Marist (10-1) at Benedictine (10-2)
The defending state champion Marist War Eagles are headed to Savannah where they will take on one of the hottest teams in the state. Since starting 0-2, (Losses to Florida class 8A Christopher Columbus & at South Carolina class 3A Beaufort) Benedictine has ripped off 10 consecutive wins. The Cadets are averaging 56.2 points per game over that span, and have given up just 15.5 points per game.
Benedictine is led by senior quarterback, and Auburn commit, Holden Geriner. Geriner has completed 66.7% of his passes for 2,538 yards and 26 touchdowns with just 2 interceptions. Senior Justin Thomas is one of many playmakers for the Cadets. Signed to play baseball at Georgia, Thomas has put together a football season to remember: 2,023 total yards (1,160 rushing, 659 receiving, 157 return, 47 interception return) and 32 offensive touchdowns. Paired with playmaking WR/DB Za’Quan Bryan, the BC offense has exploded this year.
The War Eagles enter as the top-ranked team in AAAA. The only blemish on their schedule came in week 2 vs a Woodward Academy team that would finish the regular season undefeated. Earlier this season, Alan Chadwick became just the 36th coach in high school football history to reach 400 career wins. Overall, Marist is 7th in Georgia history with 743 wins. 7 different War Eagles scored in Marist’s round 2 win over LaGrange.
